Do you think the act of using social media is going to regress and become a fad?

Jamie Shanks, CEO of Sales for Life, is here to tell you that society is going to use digital platforms more and more. This is especially relevant when it comes being a successful sales leader. Social selling isn’t a new thing but it is still in it’s growing phases. That means the online buyer and seller relationship trends are going upwards. With the world around us becoming more digital, it only makes sense that the buyer and seller need to start meeting in that digital world.

The question is: Are you ready for the transition from analogue to digital?

In episode 43 of the Digital Delusion, we sit down with Jamie Shanks author of The Social Selling Mastery book to discuss exactly how to become a top sales leader in the digital world. Jamie shares tips and tools that are key to a smooth and speedy transition. In his experience training 300 plus global customers, Jamie has perfected a daily sales routine called FEED that can be taught in 30 days yielding results you can see within 60-90 days. Let's face it, buyers have become digital from underneath you and its time to future proof your business.

In this Episode!

Jamie shares with us the process of what it takes to be the best online sales leader and how to future proof your business by joining the digitization. You’ll learn important steps and processes like:
  • The evolution of sales from analogue to online and how to bridge the gap: “Let the seller beware the buyers is now an informed buyer.”
  • Why the “broke-fix” model won’t work in online sales
  • Three stages to become the best online sales leader
  • Triggers that indicate you need to make a change to your sales leadership
  • Strategies to become a top social seller
  • The two biggest pitfalls to avoid when selling online
  • How to get out of the “dead zone” and make the sale
  • Learn to use a daily routine called FEED to increase online sales
  • How to get ready for the inevitable digitization of the commercial sales force

3 strategies for sales leaders looking to improve their online sales force

1. Undergo a mindset shift, a skillset shift and a toolkit shift

“I'm a believer that every seller or sales leader needs to go through three stages. You basically have to go through a mindset shift, a skillset shift, and then you have to go to a toolkit shift to help you.

Mindset: You have to recognize that as a leader you're willing to look at your own playbook and how your coaching and leading and keeping my team accountable and say, ‘Guess what the world has evolved around me and I am willing to admit that I need to change my skills. I need to address the new buyer.’ And so that mindset shift has to come first. They say you know what the playbook I've been running maybe it's not good enough anymore.

Skillset: Arming yourself with the information to understand what are the new digital activities you should be measuring. What are the skills that the team needs to have? And a lot of that is going to be foreign to the sales leader.

Toolkit: Turn to your sales enablement team or a third party and say, ‘Help teach this to me.’ Go find a way to learn new tools and arm yourself with these.”

2. Get more yield and throughput for your sales reps

“‘Improve your skills by saying, ‘Hey, the phone and email is not the only way to strike up a conversation and to generate new business!’

There are two valuable ways to get more yield and throughput. One is training & education and skills. Second is sales automation and tools which create efficiencies within the sales model. Companies are segmenting their sales professionals to not do all the all the tasks from top of the funnel the bottom of funnel. Hyper-specialization is a way that companies are improving yield and throughput. This is exactly what social selling is. It’s a process that every sales professional should throw into their into their tool kit. Its like icing on the cake. You need to have a baseline sales methodology or the baseline way of selling.”

3. Avoid the two biggest pitfalls of selling online
“Two major pitfalls I see with online sales all the time:

1. First, frontline sales managers falling down and not keeping accountability or coaching towards the very digital activities that would drive results. So basically they look at social selling is like a pill or a widget and they say, ‘OK let’s, let's educate our team and then magic is going to happen.’ Well, no. Every week in your one-on-ones keep the team accountable to the same activities. That are going to drive success.
2. The second is marketing. You know teams will work towards a social selling goal as a sales force but then marketing doesn't get involved. You can't have content and digital assets without marketing. So they have to be a part of the program as well.”

Great Moment

“I want to be able to train over a million sales professionals globally and make a massive impact on the sales community. And so for the next five years it's just one-by-one sales professionals moving from an analog world to a digital world. And tools will evolve and change, but at the end of the day the digitization of the commercial sales force is an inevitability and we want to help that.”

Tony Nash CEO of Booktopia started his company on a $10 per day budget in February 2004. He shares his fascinating journey on becoming Australia’s biggest online book retailer without ever having set out a “grand plan” of doing so. Realising early on that focusing on his passion for books and “being one thing to one group made it easier to connect with the consumer” Booktopia now sells one product every 8 seconds. From stocking it’s first title in 2007 to now stocking 130,000 titles and 700,000 units ready-to-ship. The company operates from its Sydney Headquarters and Distribution Centre with a floor space of 13,000 square metres and ships 20,000 items per day.

Tony brings a refreshing view to Amazon’s arrival in Australia and isn’t afraid of a little (or even big) competition reminding us that, “There is no point in freaking out. You can still have your spot in the world.” Booktopia plans on maintaining their spot by “keeping an eye on competitors through peripheral vision instead of focusing on them.” Part of Booktopia’s successful formula is to help their customers “discover something new” by adding value to the their lives and providing them with books to read that they never knew existed.

In 2015 Booktopia bought Angus & Robertson Bookworld, a 130 year old iconic Australian brand. With revenues exceeding $100 million for the first time in 2017. In 2014 Booktopia won the Telstra Medium Sized Business of the year award for NSW and became the first ever company to make the BRW Fast 100 for seven years from 2009 to 2014 and again in 2016. Tony offers listeners great tips on how to ensure their staying power in this market and how to make the purchase process a smooth transaction. He also divulges why the Romance genre helped his company heat up book sales!

As Founder of The Holla Agency, Alex explains how to use qualitative research coupled with quantitative research to really understand what your customers are thinking and feeling at the time they interact with your business. Find out how Journey Mapping (understanding every interaction point your customer has with your brand) can help you see sustainable growth through increased purchases and decreased costs.

Statistically, “It costs organisations 6-7 times more to bring a new customer into the purchasing tunnel than it does to retain a customer.” Instead of assuming you know what your customer wants, Alex has tried and tested tips to help you reframe your business through the customer lens. Tim instructs listeners to “Google themselves” immediately and gives steps on how to build a more intriguing profile. He has built a unique framework to support selling and marketing using white boarding, storytelling, ROI model, benefit selling etc. . .Forget tradition! Buying and selling will never be the same and the disruption is only going to get bigger. Social selling has been and will continue to be norm. Mark Schaefer is a globally-recognized blogger, speaker, educator, consultant, and author who blogs at (grow) - one of the top marketing blogs of the world. As Executive Director of Schaefer Marketing Solutions, he specializes in marketing strategy and social media workshops. Mark gets candid about how to cut through the online “information density” by using humanity and heart. This author of five best-selling books (Social Media Explained, Return On Influence, Born to Blog, The Content Code, and The Tao of Twitter) reveals how marketing goes in phases: something gets hot, then it gets saturated, and then it moves to the next phase. Don’t get left behind!

On this episode of Breaking Digital, Doyle and Mark have a brilliant and honest discussion about what marketing actions need to take place within your business to survive. Forget about being an overnight YouTube success. Be real. Show who you are, mistakes and all. It makes for a better story. Mark refreshingly assures us that using a “humanity” filter in our branding is the way to our customers hearts. He pushes companies out of their comfort zone by encouraging them to share what they stand for, what they believe in, and essentially to reveal “their heart?” If your branding is failing it is likely bland, antiseptic, sterile, or formulaic. Bottom line: treat people online the same way you would treat them offline. Kelly Doody is a true, 21st Century Publisher who weaves incredible stories with amazing brand value to clients around the world through the successful use of social media.

Many entrepreneurs and businesses have brilliant ideas, but are not able to actually articulate this into an audience that works with you. Having an audience is critical to growing a business, otherwise business is really not what it can or should be.

In the agency world many companies simply push social content out there, in the hopes that some of it will "stick". Kelly & co. have learned the fundamentals on why this is not a good idea, and what you can be doing differently in social media.

Kelly is the cofounder of several media related businesses, including "The Post + Post", along with Canada's biggest and best marketing event - "The Post Forum". She has been breathing life into the digital footprints and social presence of start-ups to super brands since YouTube was a baby, Facebook was fledgling and MySpace ruled the pool. She is a journalist-turned-communications junkie, and prior to finding her dream partners and co-launching Press + Post, was the proud founder of Daily Ink Media & PR. Nothing makes Kelly happier than putting words on a page, while conceiving cutting edge public relations and content marketing strategies for the people, moving organizations big and small towards becoming the brilliant masters of their online domain, and connecting western Canada's top writers and creatives with the brands and businesses who need them most.

In this episode of Breaking Digital - Digital influencer, Kelly Doody goes into some extreme detail as to how you can improve your overall social media platform for your business,  to attract and retain your audience, to make a strong, profitable business opportunity. It's about thinking how to do it easier. It's not easy, but with some of the key content principles that Kelly outlines, you can get to the bottom of creating a remarkable stories with social media.

Daniel is an Intellectual property and commercialisation expert,  working with inventors and R&D teams, who are struggling to get traction in their projects.

Many entrepreneurs and businesses have brilliant ideas, but are not able to actually create significant profits, as they typically don't know exactly what to do.

In the IP and Commercialisation industry, many innovators need to overcome what Daniel has identified as the 6 major roadblocks in the commercialisation process. Most IP projects that don't overcome these 6, usually meet with failure, or "lack of significant opportunity", and are put back on the shelf.

Using a methodology that has undergone more than 20 years of research and a state-of-the-art assessment instrument, I work with these clients to identify where they excel or breakdown in the innovation process.

Daniel has spent 30 years in the commercialisation of intellectual property and has worked with innovation teams across Asia, America and Australia. He is a published author (his latest hard-cover book is available at www.billion-dollar-napkin.com) and he is Consultant Principal of the on-line coaching and mentoring group Incubate-IP. Daniel is a member of the UN Task Force on Innovation and Competitiveness and has created a 6-week on-line training course for Innovators who have great ideas which have stalled in the commercialisation process. He has been invited to the Board of the International Federation of Inventors Associations and is active in the International GroupSkyQuest, which is a global network for IP trading. Daniel can be contacted on daniel@incub8IP.com

In this episode of Breaking Digital - Digital influencer, Daniel O'Connor goes into some extreme detail as to how you can improve your overall intellectual property platform for your business,  to attract and retain investment to make a strong, profitable business case. It's about thinking how to do it easier. It's not easy, but with some of the key content principles that Daniel outlines, you can get to the bottom of creating a remarkable innovation.

Daniel Mumby is about connecting innovation with entrepreneurship, with a focus on getting capital for smart businesses and even smarter entrepreneurs.

Known to his friends & peers as 'That Startup Guy', Daniel is the co-founder of Startup Foundation - the startup accelerator for professionals. During 20 years in corporate life (building, logistics & software), including building a large successful venture as an 'intrapreneur', he caught the startup 'bug'. He's since designed & created 15 ventures across broadband, ecommerce, hospitality, social networking, logistics, financial services and not-for-profit sectors.

Daniel now invests his time & expertise as a "Venture Catalyst" across the startup ecosystem by helping other founders to succeed, as an investor, mentor, adviser, author, presenter, speaker, media producer, blogger and creator of a venture accelerator.

Most 'great ideas' could become successful businesses, if you find the right support, at the right time. Daniel believes that the best ideas come from people with deep domain & life experience and connections, who've circled around the problems of their profession for many years. They know how to 'get stuff done', & probably had to overcome a few 'life challenges', so you don't need to 'teach' them resilience; these attributes together are the hallmarks of great entrepreneurs.

But, they’ve often got risks that hold them back from starting on the path to success. Daniel supports them throughout their journey of purpose, from “idea to launch”, by mentoring, advising, presenting, and writing about the challenges of 'disruptive innovation'.

Digital influencer, Daniel Mumby goes into some extreme detail as to how you can improve your digital innovation and implementation,  to attract and retain your audience. It's about thinking how to do it easier. It's not easy, but with some of the key content principles that Daniel outlines, you can get to the bottom of creating a remarkable business online.

Digital disruption is not always an easy thing, but then again, neither is evolution. It seems as though we've actually built a counter digital culture, which sees some Darwinian principles take hold. Are we seeing digital evolution at work? Some things work better, while others get passed over?

John Lynch is the digital agency influencer creating disruption, and looking inside the changing Darwinian digital culture of business online.

John Lynch takes us on a digital leadership journey through the lens of an agency, that sees pretty much everything out there - good bad and ugly; what's stopping, what's starting, and what's coming.

Within one of the largest agencies in the world, headquartered in NYC - TBWA - Chiat - Day, John Lynch takes us through the digital adventures and journeys that he is seeing on a daily basis, which is making things better... and seemingly worse at times.

Take a listen to what John Lynch has to say about everything digital, and making things happen in the digital leadership space.

Online business, for most people, is not fun anymore. We take it far to seriously, and yes, we even take ourselves way to seriously. 'We've lost the edge', as Goose would always say. Maybe we should all just go back to truck driving school.

Matt Giovanisci is tired of the old dogs of online, and is bringing sunshine, rainbows and even unicorns to online. Not in a magical, mystical kind of way, but in a rather, 'let's have some fun while we get some real sh*t done'.

And, he's doing it in spades. He's run multiple online business campaigns that have really shaken the marketing communities to their core, and had a laugh at himself, and the satire of others. No, it's not about making fun of others, but rather making fun with them.

You'll find some gems of implementation in this podcast episode, in online marketing, as well as how to have a great time doing it.

Matt Giovanisci is putting the fun back into online 'fun' marketing.
